In 1932, a ski-equipped monoplane settled onto the Muldrow Glacier at roughly 5,700 feet, the first glacier landing in Alaskan aviation history. It carried physicists and their instruments, not passengers.
The principle established that summer — a machine meeting ice at altitude, then leaving again — still underwrites the Denali Park Helicopter Tours tours that lift from the valley floor each summer morning.
The park itself was signed into existence in 1917 as Mount McKinley National Park, created largely to protect Dall sheep from market hunters. The Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act of 1980 enlarged it substantially and renamed it Denali National Park and Preserve. Six million acres now sit behind a single 92-mile road, most of it closed to private vehicles. Beyond that thin line of gravel, the interior is roadless. Aviation filled the gap. Talkeetna, a river town south of the range, became the staging ground: Don Sheldon flew rescue and supply missions from its airstrip for nearly three decades, and the Don Sheldon Amphitheater still carries his name.
The terrain explains the demand. Denali rises to 20,310 feet, and its base-to-summit relief of roughly 18,000 feet is the greatest of any mountain standing on land. Mount Foraker reaches 17,400 feet; Mount Hunter, 14,573. The Kahiltna Glacier runs some 44 miles, the longest in the Alaska Range, with climbers' base camp pitched near 7,200 feet. In the Ruth Glacier's Great Gorge, ice measured close to 3,800 feet thick moves between granite walls that rise nearly a vertical mile. Little of this is visible from the ground. That is why Denali flightseeing became less a novelty than a form of access. Glaciologists use the same corridors to photograph retreating termini, and much of the park's early mapping owes its accuracy to aerial survey.
