Denali rises roughly 18,000 feet from the lowlands at its base, a vertical relief greater than Everest's, which begins on a plateau already three miles high. The summit was remeasured by the U.S. Geological Survey in 2015 and stands at 20,310 feet.
Koyukon Athabascan speakers called it Deenaalee — the tall one — centuries before any survey party carried a theodolite up the Susitna. The Alaska Range beneath it was thrown up along the Denali Fault, the longest strike-slip fault in North America, and it is that fracture, not any road, that shaped the terrain Denali Alaska Helicopter Tours tours now cross.
Congress protected the region on February 26, 1917, first as Mount McKinley National Park, a reserve created largely to halt market hunting of Dall sheep. The Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act of 1980 expanded it to some six million acres and gave it its present name, Denali National Park and Preserve. A single road serves that expanse — 92 miles of gravel running west from the Parks Highway, with private vehicles turned back near Mile 15.
Aviation reached the glaciers before most of the park's infrastructure did. In 1966 he built a small hexagonal cabin on a rock spur above the amphitheater that now bears his name. Access on the ground has narrowed since 2021, when a slow landslide at Pretty Rocks severed the Park Road near Mile 45; a replacement bridge remains under construction. Read from the air, the range resolves into legible parts: the dark moraine stripes of the Yanert, crevasse fields fanning below an icefall, the granite walls of the Ruth Gorge that climbers have worked since the 1970s.
