Denali rises 20,310 feet from a base barely 2,000 feet above sea level — a vertical relief of some 18,000 feet, greater than Everest shows above the Tibetan Plateau. The Koyukon Athabascan name means "the high one." The massif manufactures its own weather; the summit stays hidden roughly two days in three.

Congress created Mount McKinley National Park on February 26, 1917, after the naturalist Charles Sheldon spent winters here arguing that Dall sheep needed protection from market hunters; his proposal reached Washington through the Boone and Crockett Club. Harry Karstens, co-leader of the 1913 first ascent — on which Walter Harper became the first person to stand on the summit — served as founding superintendent from 1921. The Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act of 1980 tripled the reserve to more than six million acres, larger than New Hampshire, and attached the present name. One road enters that expanse: 92 miles of gravel running past Polychrome Overlook toward Wonder Lake, closed to vehicles near Mile 43 since the Pretty Rocks landslide accelerated in 2021.
Aerial access grew out of Talkeetna, 113 miles north of Anchorage. There Don Sheldon began setting ski-equipped aircraft onto the Ruth and Kahiltna glaciers in the 1950s, ferrying Bradford Washburn's survey parties and lifting injured climbers off the Alaska Range. His hexagonal 1966 cabin still stands above the Ruth Amphitheater, where ice measures some 3,800 feet deep between granite walls that rise a further mile above it. Kahiltna base camp, at 7,200 feet, remains the departure point for the West Buttress route. The Alaska Range curves 600 miles across the interior, and the summit block is flanked by Mount Foraker at 17,400 feet and Mount Hunter at 14,573 feet. Glaciers do the sculpting: the Kahiltna runs 44 miles, the longest in the range, grinding rock flour into rivers that braid grey across the flats.
